Fill the holes with wood filler and let it to dry out for several hours. Afterwards, smooth the wooden surface with fine-grit sandpaper and vacuum the residues. As a trim carpenter, Dean has lots of friends in the building trades and got lots of help with his barroom.
Use finish nails to fasten the trim to the MDF board flush with the top of it. You can also create more stabilizers by adding several 2x4s to the top of the bar. On the bar top, use a combination square to draw 45-degree lines from front corners. Finish the inside edges of the bar top with an oak 12 nailed on edge along the entire perimeter of the bar top. Mark the plywood along the back edge of the board, as shown. The next step is to attach a center stile on each side and trim it as well, like we did in Step 6. Place the top and bottom rails between your side stiles to scribe them. Glue and nail the back of your side panels into a ¾ inch overhang.

Wood glue and finish nails were used when attaching all pieces involving the shelving, since they hide better than screws. I attached another cut 1×4 piece to the back of the front 1×4’s (basically attaching two 1×4’s to each other) with wood glue and finish nails. It is best to build the shelves as you go, building it upward.

Once you have these screwed together, screw them to studs from the mainframe. These will serve as the top and bottom plates for the support structure. Optionally use finish grade 1/2″ sheeting or cover OSB layer with paneling or stone product of your choice. Hopefully this was just a guide to making the bar for you. With so many dimensions and space considerations, using pencil and paper just doesn’t provide a clear preview of the final results. Scavenge some cardboard or pick up some foam insulation at a home center (less than $10 for a 4 x 8-ft. sheet). With bar molding, you get a large area of exposed end grain. The end grain of wood sucks up more stain than the face grain and turns out a lot darker—almost black if you’re using a dark stain. To prevent that, pretreat the end grain with sealer, which will partially fill the pores.

With the type of material you chose measure the dimensions you need to cover the entire front face of the framework. This will be a measurement you must make because everyones will be slightly different. When the piece is cut fasten the board to each stud with the finish nails. You also have to decide whether your bar top is going to be edged by some rounded finishing pieces. Go with a Chicago Bar Rail for people to rest their elbows on when at the bar. This will also require two pieces of 3/4” plywood one on top of each other.
This step could take between one and two weeks to complete. Your bar’s foot rail should be 6” from both the floor and the barfront, and can be constructed from a variety of materials. For resilience and look, we're using standard gas pipe, fittings, and flanges to make ours.
